What are dietary peptides?

Dietary peptides are short amino-acid chains you consume as food or supplements. The best-known are collagen peptides (also called hydrolysed collagen or collagen hydrolysate) — collagen that’s been broken into small, easily absorbed fragments. A second group is bioactive peptides released from foods like milk, whey, soy, egg and fish, which may have mild effects on blood pressure, digestion or antioxidant activity.

How they work

When you eat a peptide, digestion breaks most of it down into individual amino acids, which your body uses as raw material. Some small di- and tri-peptides survive and are absorbed intact. With collagen, the theory is twofold: it supplies the specific amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) that collagen is rich in, and certain absorbed collagen fragments may signal skin and cartilage cells to make more of their own collagen.

One quick myth-buster: creatine is often lumped in with “peptides,” but it isn’t one — it’s a separate compound made from amino acids, not a peptide chain.

Do dietary peptides work?

Collagen peptides have the most support: several trials suggest daily collagen can modestly improve skin hydration and elasticity and may help with joint comfort in some people, typically after 8–12 weeks. Milk-derived lactotripeptides show small blood-pressure effects in some studies. Across the board the benefits are real but modest — helpful for some, not transformative, and quality varies widely between brands.

How to choose a good one

  • Look for hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptides) with a stated dose — studies commonly use around 2.5–10 g per day.
  • Check for third-party testing or quality seals; supplements aren’t pre-approved for effectiveness.
  • Vegan? True collagen is animal-derived — “vegan collagen” products supply the building blocks (amino acids, vitamin C) rather than collagen itself.
  • Give it a couple of months of consistent use before judging.

Safety & legality

Dietary peptides are sold legally as foods and supplements and are generally well tolerated. Because supplements aren’t reviewed for effectiveness before sale, quality and dose are the things to scrutinise.
