What are “research peptides”?

“Research peptides” is the informal name for peptides sold online — often as powders to reconstitute and inject — that are not approved for human use. They’re marketed with a “for research use only” or “not for human consumption” disclaimer, which is a legal shield, not a safety statement. What the “research use only” label actually means

Genuine research chemicals are sold to laboratories for in-vitro or animal studies and are not manufactured to pharmaceutical standards for people. When a website sells vials with that label alongside dosing charts and “before/after” photos, the label is being used to sidestep drug regulations. Regulators (the FDA, FTC and others) actively pursue sellers who market unapproved drugs this way.

What does the evidence show?

Honestly: much less than the hype suggests. Compounds like BPC-157 have interesting results in animal studies (healing, gut protection), but rigorous human trials are largely missing. Most of the enthusiasm online is anecdotal. “It worked for me” posts can’t separate real effects from placebo, other variables, or products that don’t contain what the label claims. Absence of good human data cuts both ways — it also means real risks are poorly characterised.

The real risks
